A community foundation’s board can be its greatest asset, but ensuring you have a solid succession plan is integral to maintaining the board’s strength. In this webinar, learn what your peers are doing to recruit and maintain high-functioning boards. This webinar is hosted by Philanthropy Ohio.

Target Audience:

The Tri-State Community Foundation Partnership webinars are designed for, but not exclusive to, community foundation staff and board members and is a partnership between Indiana Philanthropy Alliance/GIFT, Council of Michigan Foundations, and Philanthropy Ohio.


Aly Sterling, President and Founder, Aly Sterling
Aly manages the direction and growth of her firm while advising clients on the organizational challenges that affect their sustainability and mission success.  Most recently, she partnered with a legal aid foundation in Los Angeles to lead their first-ever capital campaign for a new building headquarters, and currently serves as fundraising counsel to a prominent healthcare system managing multiple regional and national campaigns raising more than $85 million.

In 2015, Aly led her firm to membership in The Giving Institute, an exclusive and highly respected professional organization for nonprofit consultants. The Giving Institute is best known for publishing the annual Giving USA report.

Aly’s expertise includes fundraising, strategic planning, search consultation and board leadership development for organizations of varying sizes and capacities. She is a regularly sought for comment by the media on topics related to the nonprofit sector, most recently providing insight into social sector innovation and donor motivation for the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Dr. Pete McCown, President, Community Foundation of Elkhart County

Dr. Pete McCown serves as the President of the Community Foundation of Elkhart County - a role he has held since 2011.  Prior to assuming the Presidency of the Community Foundation, McCown served as a Professor of Business and Vice President for Advancement at Bethel College.  McCown holds graduate degrees (a Master’s in Education and a Ph.D. in Social Science) from the State University of New York.  He also holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University.  

In addition to his employment at the Community Foundation, McCown also serves as the Board Chair of the South Bend – Elkhart Regional Partnership, a Board Member of the North Central Indiana Regional Development Authority, and a Trustee at Spring Arbor University.
