A Learning and Networking Event for Indiana Community Foundation Young Professionals

Connect with fellow interns from across the state and join-in on the conversation with Indiana professionals at the Rural Prosperity Symposium.

About this Event

The Community Foundation Internship (CFI) offers a fun-filled and educational experience for students who are beginning to build their networks and explore different career paths. With this event we want our interns to know they are—and can continue to be—a part of Indiana's vibrant community of socially minded professionals.

By combining our CFI networking opportunity with IPA's Rural Prosperity Symposium, not only will participants be a part of a professional learning opportunity, they will be invited to use their voice in collaborative explorations with peers in a breakout session designed specifically for Community Foundation Interns. This peer session will focus on problem solving and solution building to issues affecting our Indiana communities.

On top of that, interns will then be invited to an exclusive networking opportunity following the symposium to connect with fellow interns, alumnus, and professionals from around the state in a relaxed environment.

The CFI Networking Event and the Rural Prosperity Symposium take place in-person at the beautiful The Sycamore at Mallow Run Winery in Bargersville. Surrounded by vineyards and natural elements, The Sycamore is located less than 20 miles south of downtown Indianapolis.

Rural-Focused Research & Trends

Rural demographer Emily Wornell Seregow of the Indiana Communities Institute at Ball State University will lead an interactive morning session centered on the latest research, trends, and drivers of sustained rural prosperity. Despite popular economic development wisdom of the last century, research is increasingly showing that quality of life, not being “business friendly,” is the linchpin of sustainable, successful communities. Inherently, quality of life development is and will be deeply place-based. While this can create challenges, it also creates new opportunities, particularly for rural communities. This conversation will explore what those challenges are, what quality of life means, how quality of life development can be inclusive, and who should rightfully consider themselves economic development partners (here’s a hint: it’s you!).

Panel Discussion

Through the lens of a notable example of community development and cross-sector collaboration, you will learn about the creation of River Valley Resources (RVR) by the Community Foundation of Madison & Jefferson County and their community partners. With a committment to supporting low-income residents, RVR is developing a competitive workforce through collaboration and innovative services for individuals, employers, and communities. Our panelists will highlight origins of their “big idea” and dive into RVR's overall strategy, approach, and lessons learned. Learn about RVR's Clearinghouse program and Rural Works! strategy.

Work alongside your fellow CFI colleagues on a visioning exercise crafted to spark creative discussion surrounding what constitutes your vision of an ideal community and/or what is needed in order to create and sustain one.

CFI Concluding Group Exercise | The Pitch

Expanding on the discussion from the Visioning Exercise work with your colleagues on a pitch to present community leadership regarding your plans for the next great sustainable Indiana community.

Finally, join us for refreshments and continued networking opportunities with peers, alumni, and industry professionals just down the road at Mallow Run Winery to unwind and end your day.
